The sad passing of former Royal Marine Norman Ackland RM 8636

The family of Norman John Ackland, RM 8636, regret to announce his passing on September 15th 2020.  

Norman left home on 11th January 1949 and joined, what he always considered to be the Finest Corps in the world, the Royal Marines. His initial training was at Deal in Kent and it continued through the year finishing at the Commando School at Bickleigh in Devon.

He was at first drafted to join a Commando Unit, part of 3 Commando Brigade and from there was drafted to the Royal Marine Barracks at Eastney, Portsmouth, where he underwent an intensive gunnery course. This course, would lead to him being drafted to HM Ships, the first being HMS Nigeria, a Cruiser stationed in South Africa. He then served in Malaya and was also recalled to serve during the Suez Crisis.

After 8 years service, he left the Royal Marines as a Junior NCO on the Training Staff of the NCOs School in Plymouth, to join the police in which he served for 30 years.
